MS-AND Awards - November 1st Deadline

What better way to honor that exceptional colleague of yours than to nominate her for a MS-AND award? MS-AND Annual Conference - March 23-24

Drum roll please…the 2018 MS-AND Annual Conference Save the Date

Dear MS-AND members,

I am so excited to announce that the 2018 MS Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Annual Conference will be at the Riley Center in Meridian, MS on March 23 and 24, 2018. There will be tracks for breakout sessions with a variety of different subject matters and well as several engaging general sessions and a business meeting. There will be a call for research posters from students and professionals, some of which will be presented as education sessions.

It is important to celebrate all of the success that has been made in our profession. Part of this celebration will include an awards ceremony, which will take place in downtown Meridian. Please look for updates on our website:

MS-AND at FNCE 2017

There will be many Mississippians attending the 2017 Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo (FNCE) in Chicago, IL to stay on the cutting edge of nutrition and contribute to the solving the food and nutrition challenges of the 21st century in our second century endeavors. If you are going to FNCE, meet us after the opening general session at 6:00 p.m., Sunday, October 21, for a group picture of the Mississippi dietitians. We will also meet for a dinner together on Monday evening at Lou Malnti’s Pizzeria.

Central District Update

CD-AND Members learn more about Organ Transplant in Mississippi
The September Meeting of the Central District Mississippi Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics took place at the Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency (MORA). Staff from MORA talked about organ, eye and tissue donation in Mississippi. CD-AND members also learn about MORA’s available resources. Toy Bell and Deborah Poole presented information to help members have a more in-depth understanding of pre-transplant and post-transplant dietary requirements.




Gulf Coast District Update

GCAND members participated in the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi Gulf Coast walk in September at Jones Park in Gulfport and raised over $100!



Mississippi Dietitians in Public Health

Several MS-AND members contributed to the Mississippi Public Health Association (MPHA) meeting on October 12-13, 2017 in Jackson, MS.

Sylvia Byrd and Renee Matich, with MSU Extension Service, discussed research that has been conducted with families regarding influencers on healthy eating for Mississippians, as well as the resources that are being developed to help educate families in Mississippi about health and nutrition.
Jacinda Roach, with the Mississippi Public Health Institute, discussed health literacy statistics in Mississippi. She also provided health literacy tools and interventions that attendees could use with various groups and populations.

Stephanie Yow and Donna Speed helped MPHA members learn more about Southeast Dairy Association (SUDIA) and the benefits of dairy. Lydia West, as well as staff from MS State Department of Health Office of WIC, provided conference attendees with information about infants’ first food choices, including breastfeeding resources that are available around the state.



Academy Updates

EAL: Call for Topic Experts
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is seeking to convene a multidisciplinary team of experts to conduct a systematic review on the topic of Cystic Fibrosis. A workgroup consists of registered dietitian nutritionists plus doctors, nurses, and/or therapists and a patient advocate. To learn more about the workgroup responsibilities and to apply for this volunteer position, please visit the EAL.
Now Accepting Applications for Academy's Spokesperson Program
The Academy is seeking outgoing, knowledgeable registered dietitian nutritionists with experience working with the news media to apply to join the Academy's Spokesperson Program. Members who have been RDNs for more than five years and have at least two years of media experience are encouraged to apply. Numerous topic areas and geographical markets are available. The application deadline is February 2, 2018.
MQii Toolkit and eCQMs FAQs Now Available
Valuable educational resources for practitioners to advance malnutrition quality in their facilities are now available. These include malnutrition electronic clinical quality measures (eCQMs) Access FAQs which address the what, who, when, why and how on quality measures. Another resource is the Malnutrition Quality Improvement Initiative (MQii) Toolkit. The MQii Toolkit is a guide for identifying and implementing clinical quality improvements for malnutrition care. eNCPT Update
The latest eNCPT 2017 Edition is now available. Key highlights/changes in this 2017 Edition include the addition of a new Population Based Nutrition Action (P) domain to the Nutrition Intervention step of the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) as well as updated Malnutrition (undernutrition) terms. The new  Population Based Nutrition Action (P) domain addresses nutrition interventions that affect an entire population or subpopulation through environmental, policy and system changes.  It is distinct from the personal and interpersonal nutrition interventions directed to a specific individual or group. Population based nutrition action incorporates community and public health approaches to address nutrition problems of the population and the underlying factors or determinants that contribute to those problems.  The malnutrition (undernutrition) nutrition diagnoses terms were updated with the addition of five separate adult and pediatric malnutrition (undernutrition) terms and reference sheets.  All changes to the terminology are explained and can be found in narrative format organized by the steps of the Nutrition Care Process (NCP): Nutrition AssessmentNutrition DiagnosisNutrition Intervention, and Nutrition Monitoring and Evaluation. ACEND Update
A copy of the October Standards Update is posted on the ACEND Monthly Standards webpage.  Monthly Standards Update   In this issue proposed changes to the 2017 Accreditation Standards and the Future Education Model Accreditation Standards are discussed.
This spring several programs chose to be reviewed under the 2017 Accreditation Standards. ACEND has received comments from program directors and reviewers on clarifications that could be made to the wording in the standards; therefore ACEND has made some slight changes to the 2017 Accreditation Standards. The revised documents are available on the ACEND Standards Website at  Public comments on the revised standards can be made at: until December 4, 2017.
The monthly Virtual Town Hall meetings are held on the second Thursday of the month at 1 PM Central Time.  The town hall provides a time for ACEND to share updates on its standards work and for stakeholders to ask questions.  Information on joining the town hall can be found at
National Congress on Prevention of Diabetes and its Complications
The Emory University School of Medicine is hosting the 2nd National Congress on the Prevention of Diabetes and Its Complications on November 17-19, 2017 at Marriott Marquis in Atlanta, Ga. The Congress is a global forum where experts on diabetes and its prevention meet to facilitate quality scientific and research discussions on principles of diabetes prevention programs from around the world. Academy representatives President Donna Martin, EdS, RDN, LD, SNS, FAND, and Immediate Past President Lucille Beseler, MS, RDN, LDN, CDE, FAND, will present a symposia on Childhood Obesity and Treasurer Jo Jo Dantone-DeBarbieris, MS, RDN, LDN, CDE, FAND, and Speaker-elect Marcy Kyle, RDN, LD, CDE, FAND, will present a hands-on workshop on and Diabetes Prevention.  A discounted registration rate is available for Academy members. Funding Opportunities: Foundation Awards Program
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation is proud to offer a variety of funding opportunities to credentialed food and nutrition practitioners and students, including their awards program. The deadline to apply for awards is February 1 unless otherwise noted. You can view all of the available awards here, which include the following categories:

  • Continuing Education Awards: These awards provide funding for qualified applicants seeking continuing education, such as leadership training, nutrition communication skills, stipends to attend conferences or lectures, speaker grants, doctoral degrees, professional development related to public policy, and more. Award amounts range up to $10,000.
  • Recognition Awards: These awards are given to outstanding members who have made significant contributions in a variety of nutrition-related concentrations, including malnutrition, women’s health, professional values, food and culinary education, nutrition education, and more. Award amounts range up to $3,000.
  • Program Development Awards: These awards provide funding for the establishment of new advanced practice residency programs, to promote CDR credentials at the local level to prospective employers or third-party-payers, and for projects and programs of nutrition education for the public. Award amounts range from $500 to $30,000.
  • International Awards: These awards, for both US residents and non-residents, provide funding for doctoral students as well as foreign nationals pursuing post-graduate work in the US; fund the sharing of knowledge and skills among food and nutrition professionals in the international community; and are given for outstanding essays on a global topic and to an outstanding individual whose work has had significant international impact. Award amounts range from $1,100 to $25,000.

I am Jenna Moore, the MS-AND Diet Manual Manager for 2017-18.  The revised manual for 2017 is currently available for sale.  You can download the order form from the MS-AND website, fill it out, and either mail it in with your check or money order, or e-mail it to receive a link for credit card payment.
